OpenResty, MariaDB, Redis, and PHP-FPM set up and kept running for you. Hetzner and UpCloud hardware in Germany with a managed stack on top. Full root access stays with you.
Not a label. A specific scope of work that runs continuously.
OpenResty runs Lua logic inside the request lifecycle. That enables rate limiting with business logic, inline WAF rules, dynamic routing, and response transformation at the server layer before your application is involved. Standard NGINX reads config. OpenResty executes code.
MariaDB is tuned for your workload, not left at defaults. PHP-FPM pools are separated per site. Redis is configured for your CMS object cache, not added as an available option. The difference shows under load.
OS security patches, kernel updates, and firewall rules are applied as part of the service. Monitoring runs continuously. Backups are stored offsite. You are not responsible for keeping the platform layer current and secure.
The managed scope covers the platform layer. You retain full root access over SSH and can rebuild, reconfigure, or deploy as your application requires. What we own is the infrastructure health, the security posture, and the availability of the stack beneath your code.
The managed scope is the same across all tiers. Higher plans add more resources, faster support response, and deeper stack tuning.
OpenResty is configured and maintained as the primary web server. Lua modules, rate limiting rules, and WAF configuration are applied and kept current. This is not available through standard shared hosting or locked managed platforms.
Database configuration is adjusted based on available memory, expected query patterns, and CMS type. InnoDB buffer pool, slow query logging, and connection limits are set at provisioning and reviewed on higher tiers.
Redis object cache is configured for WordPress, WooCommerce, or your application framework. Session handling and cache eviction policy are set correctly. Not just available, actually working.
Operating system packages and kernel security patches are applied as part of the managed service. You do not need to schedule or monitor this yourself. Critical patches are prioritised and applied promptly.
Infrastructure monitoring runs continuously with alerts on key metrics. Daily backups are stored offsite on a separate storage layer. Retention and restore options depend on plan tier.
Full root SSH access is included on every plan. You can deploy code, install packages, reconfigure services, and rebuild the server from the billing panel. Managed does not mean locked out.
The right tier depends on what your project needs from the infrastructure layer and how much operational work you want to own.
Shared hosting limits CPU allocation, restricts custom runtimes, and puts you on a platform you cannot tune. A managed VPS gives you dedicated resources and a configured stack without requiring you to become a server administrator.
Platform-layer managed hosting adds cost on top of infrastructure markup and restricts what you can run. Here the infrastructure is direct and the stack is not limited by what a control panel supports. OpenResty, custom PHP builds, and non-standard runtimes are all available.
On the Managed Scale tier and above, UpCloud MaxIOPS infrastructure is available. MaxIOPS provides consistent IOPS under sustained database load, which matters for WooCommerce, Odoo, Moodle, and other applications where I/O throughput is the actual bottleneck.
Hetzner provides the hardware. A Hetzner CX22 gives you a blank Linux server with root access. Installing OpenResty, configuring MariaDB for your workload, setting up Redis correctly for your CMS, applying security hardening, and keeping the OS patched is work you either do yourself or pay someone to do. Managed Cloud VPS bundles that operational layer into the monthly cost so you do not have to hire a separate administrator or handle it yourself.
Ubuntu LTS, Debian, CentOS Stream, Rocky Linux, and AlmaLinux are available at provisioning. The managed stack is configured on your chosen OS at setup.
Yes. Full root access over SSH is included on every managed plan. You can deploy code, install packages, and reconfigure services as needed. You can also rebuild the server from the billing panel. Managed means we maintain the platform layer, not that we restrict your access.
OpenResty runs Lua scripts inside the NGINX request lifecycle. This enables rate limiting with business logic, dynamic routing rules, WAF functionality, and response transformation at the server layer before your application processes the request. Standard NGINX handles static configuration. OpenResty handles logic. The difference matters for security, performance, and flexibility on production workloads.
We manage the OS, web server, database configuration, Redis, security patching, monitoring, and backups. You manage your application, code, CMS updates, plugins, content, and application-level credentials. The boundary stays clear and does not change based on the plan tier.
Cloudways adds a management platform on top of DigitalOcean, AWS, or GCP infrastructure and charges a markup on both. The platform layer limits what you can configure. Yhost Managed VPS uses Hetzner or UpCloud hardware at direct cost, with a managed stack that is not constrained by what a control panel supports. OpenResty, custom PHP-FPM configuration, and non-standard runtimes are available because there is no intermediate platform layer between you and the server.
Yes. Daily offsite backups are included on all managed plans. Retention period and restore options depend on the plan tier. Hourly backups are available on Managed Pro and above.
UpCloud MaxIOPS is a storage tier that provides consistent I/O throughput under sustained read and write pressure. Standard NVMe storage can show latency variance under concurrent database load. MaxIOPS reduces that variance. It is available as an option on Managed Scale plans and above, and is the recommended choice for WooCommerce stores, Odoo, Moodle, and other database-heavy applications.
Initial provisioning of the server takes 5 to 15 minutes after payment confirmation. Managed stack configuration, including OpenResty, MariaDB tuning, Redis, and security hardening, is completed within one business day for standard plans.
Yes. Paid migration assistance is available. If you are moving a production site or store, a controlled cutover plan reduces risk and avoids unexpected downtime. Open a support ticket after purchase to discuss scope.
